Consolidation for Increased Efficiency

In order to increase efficiency and tighten the public budget, the
State of Connecticut undertook a massive project to relocate and consolidate all State departments into two newly purchased high-rise buildings in downtown Hartford. What began as an on-call building assessment became a significant programming and space planning master plan, culminating in the relocation of 3,400 employees over two years. The largest portion of the project was at 450 Columbus Boulevard, where 2,200 employees were moved into a space that needed extensive upgrades to its 26 floors and 5-story parking garage. Tecton worked closely with user groups, state agencies and interest group to deliver a comprehensive plan to infuse new life into downtown Hartford’s ailing north plaza.

Design Highlights

• Office placement on interior walls and low-height cubicles
  maximize daylight and views.
• Large scale graphics brand the building for State employees
  and the Hartford community.
• Color-coded décor clearly establishes departmental zones.
• Plaza level public café and outdoor seating promote
  intradepartmental and community socialization.
