Almost 1,200 children a day enjoy a fulfilling outdoor day-camp experience at Hartford’s Camp Courant. The summer camp features educational, recreational and leadership programming for inner city pre-school through middle school children.

New post and beam pavilions were added to allow the camp to operate in all weather conditions, providing shade on hot, sunny days and shelter during rainstorms. The timbers were harvested from the site, and the new pavilions blend into the backdrop of white pine and mature oak trees.

The main building was expanded from 5,800 to 8,500 SF to house office space, a first aid station, counseling room, computer center, early learning area, kitchen, arts and crafts storage, and covered outdoor activity/game areas. Renovations to the pool, outdoor stage, a new playscape, and a new water play area were also completed.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

• New pavilions allow for camp activities to continue, rain or shine.
• Timbers and Arauca plywood frame main circulation areas, featuring wood taken from trees on-site.
• Additional outside play areas were added as well as renovations to existing activity facilities.
