Hartford Hospital | CESI - Hartford, CT

The world-renowned Center for Education, Simulation and Innovation (CESI) is the largest simulation teaching facility in New England. CESI is designed to provide students, clinicians and physicians cutting-edge training opportunities in advanced education to perfect their skills.

Tecton’s leadership in evidenced based design engaged the Hospital’s team during the planning stage of the project. The team did exhaustive research into the current and future development of training techniques and equipment, and visited sites in Houston, Cambridge and Chicago to test knowledge gained against lessons learned. The final design supports advanced technologies and provides an expandable program with an organic flow of space.

Tecton’s phased, multi-year renovations were completed while the facility remained occupied, necessitating heavy due-diligence and planning to accommodate the urban site, class and lecture schedules. The structure’s design considered not only the program’s significant amount of advanced technical equipment, but its opportunity to support the educational needs of Hartford Hospital, and the nearly 11,000 regional and national medical professionals who visit each year.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

• Mix of procedure labs, task training labs and classrooms includes an ICU, LDRP, resuscitation/patient room, trauma, operating room, robotic training classroom and a dual core DaVinci surgical robot, wet labs, VR lab and task training labs.
• Flat-panel touch screens and smart boards allow instructors to review and critique video and live streaming procedures.
• Complete update to aging infrastructure included upgrade or replacement of windows, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems and a new 3-story addition.
• Ad hoc breakout meeting rooms throughout the facility.
