< Back

Hudson Valley Cerebral Palsy Association (HVCPA), a not-for-profit human services organization, provides services to meet the needs of populations who have experienced developmental disabilities and traumatic brain injuries. Tecton designed the organization’s Brewster, New York, community center as a three-story masonry building with a walkout basement and expansive first floor plaza.

The facility allows HVCPA to support educational day habilitation for individuals from early childhood through adult care, with on-site primary and specialty medical care, dentistry, occupational and physical therapy, audiology and accompanying transportation. HVCPA also handles service coordination and outreach, advocating for the integration of the population into their community.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

  • Classrooms and special function rooms enjoy views to a large pond on site via low sill windows for non-ambulatory consumers.
  • Fully-functional training kitchen and lecture hall with sloped seating are also provided for use by both HVCPA’s consumers and their visitors.
  • Large, open lobby features a future cafe area for use in individualized training and by the community.
  • Deep roof overhangs reduce thermal exposure during the summer
  • Expressed support brackets and column elements at the lobby articulate the building skeleton.
