When MassMutual acquired the Retirement Services (RS) business from a competitor, they found themselves with limited space; the company’s classical marble and limestone headquarters featured an aesthetic in keeping with its high-profile, competitive sales industry, but the newly combined RS business group simply no longer fit. It was decided to move the group to another campus which was big on space but lacked the same rich, sophisticated corporate image as their headquarters.

As we explored the project with the client, there were two sides to consider when planning: employees and clientele. Our design needed to convey the gravitas of a respected financial firm, while being both welcoming and functional.

The resulting design delivers on our client’s external brand: it exhibits a feeling of intimate elegance and impresses upon their clientele that their investments are sound within the walls of this 160+ year old company.
