Balancing Historic Architecture
and Modern Amenities

Norwich Free Academy - Norwich, CT

Academic

< Back

Tecton’s work with Norwich Free Academy practically defines the term “specialty project.” Located at the very center of the campus, this project was originally intended to provide ADA accessibility to NFA’s signature museum, housed in the original 1885 Slater Hall building. The footprint was quickly expanded to occupy an alley between buildings and provide a new lobby and exhibit space. The new 20,000 SF atrium creates an accessible connector between the four main buildings, while providing additional classrooms, bathrooms and storage space. The resulting space integrates the architecture of the adjacent historic building and provides a clear and energized front entrance.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

  • “Non-building” concept features a light steel structure and virtually uninterrupted expanses of clear glass.
  • Finished atrium links and provides accessibility to 13 different interior elevation levels and two exterior elevation levels in four different buildings.
  • Informal gathering and learning space facilitates social interaction for the academy, the museum, the 600+ seat auditorium and the 1,000 seat gymnasium.
  • Lower level of the atrium provides contiguous museum storage accessible by elevator.
