The Sports and Medical Sciences Academy (SMSA) was founded with the vision of channeling children’s interest in athletics into a focus on their overall education. Tecton and the school imagined a building that was just as unique as its mission.

The 158,000 SF gross area required to support the program requirements limited site selection, and necessitated nearby road closures surrounding the chosen triangular brownfield site. The intent of the school was to build two schools in one building to accommodate the nearly 500 high school students and 250 middle school students. Tecton’s design created the required physical separation, while enabling shared spaces like the library and lunchroom. All spaces were united by bold colors and design features that echo the energy of the school and the students.

• Neutral tones in classrooms keep learning environments focused and orderly.
• State-of-the-art Fitness Center and field house feature four courts, a climbing wall, weight room and training facility.
• “Hall of Fame” concourse celebrates prominent Connecticut sports figures, teams, and medical sciences leaders.
