Housed in an aging shopping mall, Tunxis Community College was eager to grow its academic program, create a campus brand and build an environment that dignifies the community college experience. Our collaboration with the college began with a campus masterplan, followed by phased renovation and construction of a new library, classrooms and laboratories.

At Tecton, we often find that the projects that excite and inspire us the most are those that present the greatest challenge in site features. By embracing the site’s sloping terrain and maximizing programming efficiency, Tecton was able to provide additional classroom space and an unplanned full basement. 175,000 SF of space was added through Phase I and II, with Phase III additions currently in progress.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

• Classical New England campus architecture features warm brick, punched openings, pitched roofs and colonnades, relating the building back to its educational mission.
• Glass enclosed tower draws attention from the street view.
• Three story atrium and interior “streetscape” provide ample opportunities for informal interaction, socialization and study.
• Bright color and texture of architectural surfaces enlivens the interior.
• LEED certified building includes sustainable features like motion sensor lighting and a 4,500 gallon rainwater storage tank to service restrooms.
